Reb Beach | Tony Grey Elevation Project

This week, I discuss working with Reb Beach, and our time together on the project and how he has helped inspire my music.

Rock and Metal

I have always been really into rock and metal music. My first ever concert I went to was Motorhead.

I just love the raw energy and the way the crowd really gets into it.

Berklee Days

When I went to Berklee I kind of lost some of my love for this music and got really into Jazz. I felt that was what I needed to be working on to improve.

I have to admit my mindset was completely wrong in that regard. Music is music and to be able to express a convincing point of view through your instrument is a real art whatever the genre.
Great Rock guitar solos are an art form all the way from the note choices, the sound and the articulation.
I have been listening to Reb Beach for years and years if I realized it or not.
He has been on countless sessions from the Bee Gees, Chaka Khan to Alice Cooper, Winger, Dokken too Whitesnake. He is featured heavily on big movie soundtracks such as The Lost Boys, Karate Kid and Bill and Teds Bogus Journey.
His lyricism through his guitar is really something special.

I got a call from my friend and drummer David Throckmorton about the possibility of hooking up and playing with Reb. He had been playing with Reb along with the great bassist Billy Sheehan.

Luckily I got the call from Reb and he invited me to his home to play and hang out. I spent that night watching and listening to performance after performance of him.

I was completely blown away by his artistry and was very excited and a little nervous to meet him. When I got to his house we jammed for about an hour and there was an immediate connection and mutual respect.

Been There, Done That

He made me feel really welcome and is such a humble and nice guy.

He has been there and done it on the biggest stages all over the world over and over again. He has never lost his love and sense of adventure for playing music.

Talking to him you would never know he was one of the greatest and most accomplished guitarists of all time. Since then I have been playing shows here and there with him in his band.

Playing with Reb is an amazing experience and I have been trying to absorb as much as I can from him.

Recording The Track

I invited him to record on my project “Elevation” and was really honored and touched about his enthusiasm for the track I wrote.

We had such a great hang, and really enjoyed working on the track together.

I ended up calling the track “Elevation” because I feel my interaction with musicians like Reb really elevate my game.
Different genres require a lot of respect and one is no more challenging than the other.

Working with humble musicians like Reb really inspire me to keep working hard and remind me that it is a lot of fun too.
