Water

Maybe I was never supposed to live in Florida. When Winger was in it's hey day, I bought a big house on the lake in Ft. Lauderdale. While I was on the road, I called Deb one day and she had bought waterbeds for the kids. As she was talking to me she was filling them up with a hose she had attached to the sink. We got to talking , and all of the sudden she said " ****!!!! The water beds!!!She quickly hung up with me and ran upstairs. The bed was 6 feet tall and hovering like the giant tit that chased Woody Allen in " Everything you always wanted to know about sex". Terrified, she called the water bed company, and they told her to just let it drain out in the sink. So she pulled the hose off the faucet and let it drain into the sink. Then it was time to pick up Kelly at school. While she was gone, the hose popped out of the sink, and landed on the air vent register on the floor, flooding the entire downstairs. She came home to a giant pool in the living room. She called me freaking out. Her voice was so high. She was screaming in falsetto. Just then there was a knock at the door. It was a Haitian man in a white suit. Behind him, a truck that had " Jojo's carpet cleaning" painted on the side. " Hello mam, would you like your carpets cleaned at a fraction of the" " DOES THAT THING SUCK WATER???" my wife squeaked, pointing to his truck. Local dogs ran. " Why yes.....yes it does....Why?" the man asked. As luck would have it, the man sucked up all the water with his special truck, designed to do just that.
I came home and we had run out of propane. I went to the propane place, and got into a conversation with the guy about how dangerous propane tanks are. He said " We had a guy last week who left here after filling a tank, and got into a car accident. He was killed not by the other car, but by the SHRAPNEL from the explosion of the tank in his back seat. Yep, these things are killers."
I went back to the house and hooked up the tank to the grill, which was on the pool patio, a foot from the lake. Just an exquisite house...2500 square feet of luxury. Anyway, I formed the patented giant Reb burgers, after working the mustard and garlic and onions into the raw meat.I topped them off with lemon pepper and walked out to the patio with my beer and my perfect manly creations of food. I opened the valve at the top of the propane tank and turned the grill on. Then,I struck a match and lit it. Then I threw the burgers on. It was then time for another beer, and as I was walking back to the kitchen, I heard " WHOOSH...SSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS..RUMBLE RUMBLE. I turned around and there was fire shooting out from the bottom of the grill. I screamed to my wife " Honey get a blanket!!" The grill was underneath the overhang of the house, 12 feet above. I knew that I was probably not going to make it, and kept waiting for the boom and the shrapnel. I thought about the house catching on fire with the kids inside after my ugly demise. My wife came running out with the blanket, saw the imminent danger, and said" What the hell are you gonna do with this blanket???" in lolly pop guild voice. Just then the children flocked out of the kitchen and screamed. That's when the Homer Simpson in me, which makes up 90 percent of my personality, kicked in. I looked at the grill....I looked at the pool....I looked at the grill....I looked at the pool. Grill..Pool Grill Pool Grill Pool GRILLPOOLGRILLPOOL
" Honey I am doin it!!!I announced, and grabbed the the grill and pushed it on its squeaky wheels towards the pool. Er Hee ..Er Hee... ERHEE ERHEEERHEEERHEE SPLASH!!!! ...Silence befell the Beach patio, as soggy half cooked burgers floated to the top of the water.
There is nothing like raising a grill out of pool with your family. I pushed from under water while the girls pulled on the rope I had attached to it. It was family bonding at it best. Later, I found a little rubber O ring on the ground. It somehow fell off the male insert to the propane tank. We used the grill for another year.

Not much to tell. I'm writing. Writing writing writing. I tried putting an eighties tribute band together, which I still think would go over really well around the area. The singer I had in mind couldn't do it, so I am back to plan B, which is the Reb Beach project heavy 70's rock and Blues band. I am booking local dates for that. I will post the dates for Nov. and Dec. somewhere on the site. It's just to keep my chops up, and get back on a stage where I belong....any stage. I did a Beatles tribute benefit at Rosebuds last week, and being on stage again felt sooo good.
Thanks to all for their comments on the Fusion Demo. Everyone seems to really dig it, and Colter made some great suggestions of labels to send it to, which I will do this week. I would love to make that record...more writing. It sends a shiver down my spine to imagine what Throck or Rod could do to that stuff. The sound bytes aren't working at the moment for the fusion stuff, so I have to look into that.
We are just finishing negotiations with Frontiers Records for distribution in Europe of Masquerade. It did pretty well in Japan. Still no bites on it here, and I don't know if it is my name or my voice that is to blame.....probably both. I don't know..I listen to it and I am very proud of how it came out. The reviews were just awesome, so that is good. I just bought "Tantric" and I think my songs are stronger. I think the songs are better than a lot of stuff out there, but I am busy writing the next one, and hopefully I will beat Masquerade. I already have some KILLER stuff.
I am trying to finish a song for a World Trade Center relief record, but I am stuck right now on that one. I am going to play on the Jason Becker 2 album. Brian Macdonald is sendin me some new stuff to play on. He rules.
We should have pictures for sale on the swag page in the next week or so, with T shirts to follow. Also, I am re mastering Masquerade without "Day Of", to sell on the site.
I will update the main page when there is a little more to tell, like " David Coverdale just called and asked me to join Whitesnake!" or something.Or maybe I'll call Diamond Dave and put this up there!!!
Thanks guys!

Update from Reb on Beachboard

Ok ...I'm Back.
May 1 2001 at 12:14 PM Reb

Hi forum friends!
After a long hiatus from contact with ANY of my friends, I am back with an album that sounds great.I had to like go into hiding to create this stuff. I didn't return anyones calls, and I'm afraid to go into my fanmail as there must be 400 emails to respond to.I'm just gonna pick a day and do it.There is still alot of work to do. Getting a deal in the states is at the top of the list.I'm burnin copies to send to anyone in the business I can think of.
I have a hard time believing I am finally done recording. It is so nice to wake up and not have to rush into the studio and try to create something cool AS QUICKLY AS POSSIBLE!!!!I woke up this morning and fired up the grill and cooked up some bacon and eggs outdoors. Today my plan is to lie in the sun and drink beer.Tomorrow, Deb and I will go down to the strip in Pittsburgh, where all the fresh food is, and get a few thick Halibut steaks to blacken on the grill when Kip comes to stay on Thursday night. I have to start going to the Gym this week. Ten pounds of blubber has found it's way to my face, the focal point for any blobbyness, caused by excessive drinking and sitting in front of the speakers for months.I look like Charlie Brown. You could grab my jowls and hang on to them like a water skier while I swing you around.I look like a broomstick with a basketball balancing motionless on top of it. Gym? Beer? Gym? Beer? .....Beer today ,Gym tomorrow. It is too nice outside man!
I will talk to Japan about putting up some stuff.I have a million other questions for them. Like what if my friends at the local radio station want to play this stuff? I think that will have to wait till July. July seems so far away, but that is the earliest I am allowed to release it in the states.
Thanks for stickin with me guys!REB

Update from Reb on Beachboard

Update!
April 21 2001 at 3:20 PM Reb

Ok folks!
I'm stopping in( finally!)to tell you guys where we are with this thing. I have not had time to come here at all in the last few weeks, but last night we had a power surge that knocked out the power section of the board. I have a few hours today while they fix it.
Last night ( before the power surge), we made ruffs and sent them to Japan. I got a chance to really listen to the stuff for the first time, and aside from a few less than adequate vocal performances, which I will fix,the darn thing sounds very nice indeed. Big ass drum sounds, man. There are other issues that I'm just not gonna sweat. Some of the solo tones aren't as good as they could be, cause it was my first time recording guitars by myself at home.I'm used to having an engineer say " move that 57 to the right a little". The first solos I cut aren't as fat as the last solo's I cut, since I taught myself as I went.It was a huge learning experience and shakey at first, but I sure know how to get good guitar sounds out of my house now.
We are mixing, and this is the fun part. The fact is that mixing can make or break a song, and with the Pro Tools technology we are using, it just keeps getting better and better and better.Japan gave me an extra few days to mix, and that was a Godsend.
I have sung in all different kinds of styles, from Matchbox 20 to Alice in chains, whatever the tune called for.I know I am not a REAL singer like Tyler or Coverdale, but my goal here was to just pull it off enough to get the vibe of the songs across, and have it be listenable. Yeah, some of these tunes would definitely be better with a real singer, but this is my record, as Maz pointed out to me. I find that when you use another singer, usually it somehow gets perceived as his record, and all of the sudden there is another chef in the kitchen. Every time there is a question about something, and everyone turns to me like E F Hutton, I just dig it! The first time that happened, I turned to see if there was someone behind me.
I flew to New York last weekend and did the photo shoot for the record. I got really drunk, cause I hate to fly, but the photos came out great because I was so relaxed! The next day we went out and bought a really cool Mardis Gras mask, and then shot it for the cover. It looks great! Mark Weiss ( Art Guy )says I can post the cover when it is done, but I have to ask Japan.
We continue to mix until Thursday when its back to the Big Apple to Master at Sterling Sound. The next day, we Fed Ex it to Japan and hope they don't say something like " Please....Not Finished?"
The album will be DONE on Thursday definitely, and I just can't believe it!
Yes Scullhead, Kip is coming to town on the 4th and has asked me to jam with him. Scullhead and I have been friends since we were kids jammin in his mom's living room. My mom actually called his mom Mrs. Scullhead by mistake one time.Had I known that mom had passed those " foot in mouth" genes over to me, maybe I would not have been quite so mortified. Anyway, Kip knows that getting me to do acoustic stuff is like pulling teeth. Doing Seventeen on acoustic makes me want to puke. Know, if I had my rig.....maybe. Except, Kip knows the power of beer when dealing with me, and always says " Well, bring your acoustic just in case." and then waits till I'm seriously buzzin, and asks the audience to coax me up on stage. I've actually played close to 200 games of chess with Kip and never won. One time, I came so close to winning and the whole bus was cheering me on. Kip was actually sweating. Then I lost, and my father's words echoed in my brain. " Rebbie, that boy is a shark, and you are just Bambi with a penis."

Update from Reb on Beachboard

Update
March 15 2001 at 11:33 AM Reb

Hello everyone,
I have a moment while I am backing up a song here ( It takes forty five minutes on this stupid thing.)and I thought I would drop everyone a line. We've added Tony Janflone to the link list and he is very famous around here. If you ever come to Pittsburgh and want to see some outrageously good guitar playing, just look in the local rag for him, as he plays somewhere every day.
Recording is going much better now that I decided not to have a heart attack every time I pressed record. I'm just having fun with it, and you can really tell the difference between the first couple of songs I recorded, and the most recent ones. I may have enough time to redo some of that stuff, but it still sounds ok. " Fanatic" is really heavy and kinda dark in a Zeppelin/ STP sort of way.
"Better Shade of Grey" has my favorite solo and I sing through a distortion pedal on the eerie verses.
There is also alot of happy stuff. I'd say the album is half and half. The instrumental has an insane drum solo that I ended up doing cool space noises over. It sounds like the whole band got on the space shuttle for a minute. It is an uptempo Satch Boogie kinda thing which I call " Get out and Walk".
Ghost is the obvious single ala Down Incognito. Real Real poppy. I hope it doesn't bug you guys. There is really something for everyone on the record, and as of now I am pleased about that. From reading your post's I am encouraged so much, and one thing I have gotten out of it is that you all seem to like all kinds of music. I mean , I had the biggest problem making some of the more hip and " Now " sounding songs able to have a big long guitar solo in it.It is not the type of thing you hear these days, and it was hard to marry the two. A few friends said it couldn't be done ,and to just do a blues record or a Dream Theatre thing. After all, this is a guitar record for Japan. How are you gonna put Freebird over " Alice and Chains" ? Well, Damn it , it's my record and I like it. I think you guys will really like it. I just finished " Sorrow " and it is a haunting heavy ballad with the big Headed for a Heartbreak outro...big long solo for days kinda thing, ala Gilmore. There is lotsa that on the record.
Sorrow stained eyes
Hide behind the lies inside you
Conceal your pain

Can't forgive what you can't forget
You can't live with all you regret

Sorrow stained eyes
Hide behind the lies inside you
Conceal your pain
That's part of the chorus. It is one of the darker ones , but the lyrics are perfect, as it is a cool heavy ballad. I really relate to Bill Hickeys lyrics.
Well, back to work. I have to get these guitars done before Monday, when I start to Sing! Ha HAAAAAAAAAAA Lalalalalala . HMMMM. ... KIP ! Where are you ? KIP? Oh Kip? This is where you usually come in. I guess I will just do my best and fix it in the mix ( Thank God for Pro Tools) Cheers everyone!

Update from Reb on Beachboard

Untitled March 7 2001, 2:39 PM

Just a quick note to say your support on this post has helped me greatly. Things are going much faster now, as I have taken some of your great advice and decided to have fun, instead of pulling my hair out. Polygram Japan is pressuring me to finish the record so it can be released during a big Japanese holiday that ends on May 6th. I am with them in wanting to have the album released at that time, but it is DEFINITELY cuttin it close.
I can't tell you what it means to have people that care about you and your work like this...I am deeply honored and can't begin to thank you enough.
With much gratitude,
REB

Update
March 1 2001 at 4:04 PM Reb

Hello all,
Well, it's been two weeks of recording guitars, and I have never worked so hard on something in my life. I am so very blown away by the songs that are done, but frustrated that I am now behind schedule. I am alone in a room every day and night going " Do I like that? Is that good enough?" My whole life, there has always been an engineer saying" We are not erasing that... I love it " Nine times out of ten, a half an hour later I love it too, and am glad the engineer kept it.I am finding many spots where , on the demo, I must have said to myself " I'll figure it out when we are doin the record " cause I actually thought that day would never come. Questions like : "What the hell do I do over this minute and a half drum solo?" " Why does track 10 only play back when you turn the machine on and off again?"
I called Yamaha to tell them I was having problems with the machine locking up and dumping unsaved work, and they actually said to me " Do not touch the jogwheel, or you will lose any unsaved performances." I said " Aren't there important functions that can only be done with the jogwheel?" and he said " No , just use the cursor"... Well, it turns out that I probably have more hours on this thing than he does, because there is TONS of stuff you can only do with the jogwheel, not the cursor.
I know what you are thinking..."Why is Reb doing it at home?" Basically, it is a very small budget and the studio is $800 a day... so far I have saved like ten grand doing it here.Anyway, I am thinking of hiring a cheap engineer to speed things up.
The good news is I am so happy with the stuff so far , and Japan has said I can post some bits as soon as there is stuff to post. ( Three Weeks ? )Thank you all so much for your patience while I have been driving myself crazy, it shouldn't be much lnoger until I am back on the forum ( and in the chat room)all the time. Take Care, REB

Oh, and one more thing... March 1 2001, 4:55 PM

When I said I could poop on these rhythm tracks and still have a great record, I was wrong. The tracks are so good, that anything less than perfection, guitar wise, stands out like a sore thumb. Live and learn.REB

Top 16 Winger songs
February 10 2001 at 9:45 AM Reb

Hello good people !
Today I start guitars here in this dank little garage. I spent all last nite wiring the room with four mics and routing them to the right channels. I am still getting the hang of this new Yamaha recorder, so I am a little slow with the routing. I think I've got it down now.
Anyway, Kip called me last nite, and asked me to come up with 16 Winger songs for the " best of ". I seem to recall you guys already posting your fav's. Maybe I will just scroll back and find them.Your suggestions are very welcome , though.Time to JAM!!!! REB

Update from Reb on Beachboard

Hello everyone,

You are not gonna believe this is coming from me, as I am forever the pesimist, but these are the best sounding rhythm tracks I have ever heard.Throck ( Dave Throckmorton...sent from heaven. I know at the very least I have a cult drum fanatic record)came in and freaked us out with his INSANE drumming... so BAD that the record now has three drum solo's. Also, I am playing piano and singing a song I wrote while we were there in the studio that is just beautiful.I mean these tracks are GOLDEN! I just can't get over it.It just sounds amazing. I am stunned. It is just a great record and I haven't even played on it yet!I could poop on these rhythm tracks and I would still have a great record.I swear you guys must have beamed your positive energy right to the studio. It was like four days of magic.
For Steve and Zander and all the musicians:
I just bought the new Yamaha AW4416 16 track hard disk recorder with 16 ins and the cd recorder and all the bells and whistles and this thing is a beast. Kip told me to return it as soon as possible ( he inspires me so...)but darn it, I have always wanted moving faders and now I got em.Tomorrow, I go in and we dump the drums and the bass and a click to the Aw4416, and then I take it home and get guitar sounds and away we go.When I am done with guitars, we dump it back to pro tools and do vocals and mix.
Played a great amp today at Pianos and stuff. The new automated Fender with the moving dials? It is just sick, the amount of sounds that thing can get, with reverb and the tape echo was really authentic. Now I need a thousand bucks, as the record money is already spent.I could really use that thing on this record, though. The new Marshall combos they just got in were also very very good sounding, and I usually hate new Marshalls.
These backing tracks sound like if Sting went Heavy!!!!Hahahahaha. I am truly the luckiest guy.I can't wait for you to hear it.I am hoping Japan will let me put some stuff on the site before it is released, but have to see what they say.Take Care all, and thanks for rolling on without me.( Even if I wasn't doing the record , I probably couldn't respond very often, as Debbie has discovered Pogo.com, and is hooked on the slot machines. Never again do I have to be gazed at with disapproval when I play Star Trek online.REB

Update from Reb on Beachboard

Rehearsals

January 27 2001 at 9:41 PM Reb

Hi Guys,
Just a quick update.Rehearsals were like being in heaven. The drummer I have is like playing with Rod again, but with a style all his own. He is an undiscovered prodigy named Dave Throckmorton, and possesses a gift that I rarely see. Playing with him is an honor, and what he has added to this record has made me giddy. We call him Throck, and Tommy and I just stare and forget parts and laugh at how sick this guy is.Tommy physically fell off his stool today, as Throck made us have to stop the song to recover from what he had done to our heads with his pristine fills. The songs have come alive and come together. They sound like songs from the same artist, even though they are pretty diverse ( one of the problems I was having is " Do all these songs belong on the same album?" ...Continuity is important). There is a Satch boogie-esc instrumental, that is the next step up from Black Magic.I have scary dark grooves and poppy rock songs AND some bluesy stuff and some Led Zeppelin stuff. It is all good. Only three more hurdles.
The recording of the basics :
We are cutting the basics to two inch tape,as my favorite albums were cut that way. Then I take a stereo mix home and do all the guitars. Then we go back in and drop in the guitars, and fly everything into Pro -Tools.
The Vocal:
I have to sound like a real singer,or that will be the weak link in the chain for the skeptical to focus on. At the very least, I know that 60 percent of the songs I can sing well, and don't need anyone else. My friends say I am over critical, but I consider it a large hurdle, none the less.
The Mix:
The most important thing. Kip and I are talking about him doing it,and there are other options. There is no one better than Kip, except Mike Shipley, who I couldn't afford.I will probably mix it myself, so I can make the guitars as loud as I want for once!!! Hahahaha!
Just wanted to let you all know that I am ecstatic, and everything sounds unreal!!I will write again after we are done cutting the basics on Wednesday. REB
